Welcome Back William
Last night in the shiny new complex, the sound was really good, except for one of the later Oceania songs where William banged on his mis-tuned tinny Stratocaster like a monkey, giving everyone a frontal headache. His drummer, with a Timberlake look, was positively shredding, while the bass and other guitar played well but seemed tired from a long tour. Let鈥檚 get home and crawl under the sheets for a few weeks.
The big globe visual screen and light show were a total bore, reportedly designed by the Pink Floyd guy, which was probably a waste of money. Archival footage of a missile factory and other visuals didn't add much to the experience. Maybe it's because William, with his chubby belly and dramatic rock poses, is more interesting to watch. It was disconnected how much he talked about football, even responding to boos with a comment about Tom Brady.
The interlude commentary felt pretentious and irritating, not adding to the band's reputation. At the end of the day, they write good songs, have an interesting voice, and can play guitar well. Ripe probably does make more sense now, but it's not because of the band.
Oceania is a very good album, and hearing it in full was awesome, despite the crowd's lack of appreciation. Playing the whole album front to back was a bold move. The newly remastered Mellon Collie also sounded amazing, prompting thoughts of an acoustic version and small venue tour.
All in all, it was a good, safe arena rock night. Starting with XYU and including a Bowie cover were appreciated choices. The debut of the new song played well, but some fans wished to hear other classics instead. And the t-shirts were a steal at $20. Rock on.
